Girl gets tongue operation to speak Korean
A British girl had an operation to lengthen her tongue so she could speak Korean more fluently.
Rhiannon Brooksbank–Jones, 19, from Nottinghamshire in England, started studying Korean two years ago. She had problems pronouncing some words and found out that she had a tongue that was a bit shorter than average. So she had an operation to lengthen her tongue by about 1cm. Now she can say the words that she couldn’t say before.
"My speaking level was excellent but I found it difficult to pronounce some sounds," says Rhiannon. "I was having trouble with the Korean letter L, which is very frequent and comes from a slightly higher place in the mouth than the English L. Because my tongue was too short, the operation was my only choice. My pronunciation was very foreign but now I can speak with a native Korean accent."
The teen plans to study Korean at university and hopes to live in Korea one day.
